Lake Association Update – January 2014
Posted on January 9, 2014:

Happy New Year!!
It has been a crazy month.  This evening I came home to my next door neighbour skating on his front lawn. When he saw me pull in, he skated across his lawn, over his driveway up the snowbank that I plowed pre-xmas, over my driveway, into my garage asking me if my son could come out and skate.  WOW!

Your board of directors recently had our first 2014 directors meeting.  Here is some recent developments, as always, your questions, comments and concerns are encouraged

Cheers – Jeff

Bill Peairs, the chair our Lake Plan steering committee, has been busy laying the framework and investigating options for a Lake Plan.  First, let me explain that a Lake Plan can mean many things.  It is really up to YOU how broad our Lake Plan will be.  It could be as simple as a lake capacity study, or it can include numerous other components such as, Mapping, Flora/Fauna Studies, History, Recreational, and Social aspects of the watershed.

For the past three years, we have focused on developing the Lake Capacity aspect of the Lake Plan and have been in constant dialogue with other lake stakeholders such as South Frontenac Township, Ministry of the Environment and Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority. Coordination was crucial because whatever document we produce we want it to have weight with the other stakeholders. We are well on our way collecting the data required.

Bill is currently investigating our options.  We anticipate that we will be having a Lake Plan Committee meeting in the near future.

  • If you are interested in the health of the lake.
  • If you are interested in the history of the lake.
  • If you are interested in continuing to foster this wonderful community.

I encourage you to volunteer for this committee.  We would like the final document to come from the grass roots and be reflective of our membership.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Lake Plan, please let me know.  I will compile these names, and combine them with the names offered from our survey and pass them to Bill.

Send us your pictures. With the ice storm, pond hockey tourneys and trail use I am positive the photographers on the lake have a great collecting archiving this winter. You can download your pictures to our website or send them to me.

This year we will be once again publishing a newsletter (similar to Last Years Annual Newsletter.)
This year the plan is to give every resident of the lake a hard copy when we do our annual membership drive in June.  We need your help:

  1. If you are interested in writing a short public interest piece let me know and I will put you in touch with our publishing team (Dave Borrowman and Loretta Garbutt).
  2. If you are a small business and would like to advertise, then for $20 we will publish your business card in the Newsletter and our Website so all of our members can become familiar with what our neighbours on Sydenham Lake can offer.  (Money raised will go to printing costs)

Mark your Calendar. This years AGM will be Saturday 5 July. Details are being firmed up, however, I anticipate the format to be similar to previous years.

I am anticipating at least one or two director positions this year. If you are interested in becoming a director I encourage you to contact myself or one of the other directors found here.

It is a great group of people who have the privilege and responsibility to work on behalf of its membership and the lake. In addition, we usually have a few cocktails at our meetings!!

As previously reported the late autumn windstorm curtailed our mapping effort. The group of volunteers led by Evan Fox will be out as soon as the ice is out to start mapping the lake bottom. Our goal is to produce our membership a hydrographic map by the end of the summer.  (Keep your fingers crossed)

IAW our Constitution and Bylaws, we require 2 x members-at-large to meet with our Treasurer and inspect our books. If you are interested let me know. It would occur in the spring

While reviewing recent developments at SF Township, I came across this link that has general interest for Sydenham Lake. It concerns the environmental remediation of a building lot on Sydenham Lake.,Lot%208%20Loughborough.pdf

Our next directors meeting will occur Tuesday 4 March.  All of our meetings are open to the public. If you are interested in attending let me know and I will send you the details as they firm up.
